In SAFE Hands Program Now Offered

The Millville Public Safety Departments are happy to announce the availability of the In SAFE Hands Program for Millville residents. This program is open to:

Those who are 55 years of age or older and live alone; or
Those who are alone for extended periods of time on a regular basis; or
People with a medical condition(s) that could lead to incapacitation.

The program consists of a lockbox, owned and maintained by Millville Public Safety, which will be installed on the exterior of the participant’s residence by Public Safety personnel. The lockbox will contain a key to the residence (supplied by the resident).

The key will only be accessed by responding police officers or fire personnel in the event of an emergency where personnel cannot gain access to the residence.  The lockbox will not be accessed by anyone for any other means.

“Emergency personnel are often faced with the problem of entering a secured residence to render aid to someone who is not physically able to open the door for the first responders,” Chief Ronald Landry said. “Millville’s In SAFE Hands Program aims to address this dilemma, providing an option to get into a home quickly without causing damage.”

The lockboxes are for security, not for the convenience of people who have participate in this program; this program is not a lock-out service for participants. If the lockbox is no longer needed or the key to your home changes, participants have an obligation to contact Millville Public Safety to remove the lockbox or exchange the key. The lockbox remains the property of the Millville Public Safety Departments.

In addition to the lockbox, each participant will be given a magnetized Files of Life holder for their refrigerator, which contains information about the residents’ medical history, medications, emergency contact information and more to assist emergency personnel during their response.

This program is made possible through the Department of Fire Services Senior SAFE grant awarded to Millville. There is no cost to apply and participate in the program, and lockboxes are installed free of charge.

Call the Police Department at 508-883-3117 or the Fire Department at 508-883-4740 to obtain an application for this program.
